The effects of global warming, caused by carbon dioxide emissions, are well known and a source of global concern. Increased industrialisation, with consequent increased burning of fossil fuels, and increased deforestation have led to steadily increasing carbon dioxide levels.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) - also known as Carbon Capture and Sequestration - and other approaches to limit emissions of carbon from power generation and industrial production, are of major global importance. There are many ways of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources by changing the energy generation profile to include more use of renewables and nuclear power. However, in the near to mid term, the use of fossil fuel, notably coal and gas, will remain prominent.
